Position Purpose:

Strategic positioning of the world-renowned Blue Train, South Africa’s premier luxury train service, operating various destination in South Africa and the Region.

Conceptualise and drive tourism and heritage development campaigns in partnership with other stakeholders.

Provide strategic leadership and guidance in ensuring the preservation and effective management of Transnet’s Heritage portfolio as its custodian, in line with legislative and business requirements and corporate governance guidelines.

Lead and guide the commercialisation of Transnet’s Heritage assets and exploitation thereof through tourism for revenue generation purposes and reputational gain.

Facilitate strategic partnerships with Private Sector Entities.

Ensure effective strategic planning and implementation of an overall objective of the tourism and heritage marketing strategy.

Facilitate and establish intergovernmental as well as stakeholder engagement and partnerships to effectively reach a variety of business objectives.

Valorise Transnet historic pieces of arts and paintings through the creation of viewing facilities such galleries including travel shows.

Custodianship of legacy of physical artefacts inherited from past generations.

Ensure engagement with strategic stakeholders namely the Dept of Tourism, the DPE, Heritage Foundation and Heritage

Associations regarding the management of the Heritage portfolio.

Establish credible internal systems and governance processes to enable the successful achievement of the required

business performance.

Grow and position the Blue Train locally, regionally and globally, and ensure effective management of the total portfolio,

namely the daily running of operations inclusive of marketing, security, safety, maintenance, human resources and financial

management.

Position outputs:

Ensure effective implementation of the overall Business Development strategy.

Develop and drive an effective marketing sales strategy to grow Transnet’s revenue.
Lead the development and implementation of a strategy for the commercialisation and optimisation of Heritage Assets and Tourism to ensure protection of Transnet’s heritage and earn a return on Transnet’s investment. Position Transnet heritage assets to build sense of unity and belonging while creating a better understanding of previous generations and the history of Transnet.

Custodianship of legacy of physical artefacts inherited from past generations.

Ensure engagement with strategic stakeholders namely the Department of Tourism, the Department of Public Enterprise (DPE), Heritage Foundation and Heritage Associations regarding the management of the Heritage portfolio.

Contribute to and influence policy development in respect of Heritage, Heritage Assets and Tourism in line with all relevant legislative and business requirements.

Manage and ensure the development of tourism offerings in alignment with existing services such as the Blue Train and also external tourism service operators.

Grow and position the Blue Train locally, regionally and globally.

Establish tourism partnerships in order to enhance the Blue Train brand.

Provision of strategic management oversight to ensure that the Blue Train Service levels are aligned with market expectations and branding.

Provide thought leadership on developments in the Tourism and Heritage Sector landscape in pursuit of Transnet goals.

Facilitate and partner with relevant operators in the Heritage Rail market to promote our history and create sustaining revenue streams.

Seek and expand into new markets namely luxury offerings relating to Transnet Heritage such as steam engines.

Execute market segment specific stakeholder events to enforce the Transnet brand and service offerings.

Liaise and engage with key stakeholders across Transnet to ensure integration of programmes, initiatives, services and

activities to enhance the effective functioning and performance of the Heritage and Tourism portfolio.

Ensure the development and management of a national inventory database of all Transnet’s Heritage assets and sites.
Develop and implement an integrated Heritage and Tourism framework across the business (ODs) for alignment purposes.

Develop Transnet’s tourism and hospitality as an additional revenue stream.
Categorize the elements of Heritage and Tourism, e.g. Heritage sites, Heritage museums, Heritage assets, etc. and develop a working format with the current caretakers of the sites.

Identify the geographical, situational and technical requirements for the Heritage and Tourism assets.

Package commercial offerings and ensure fresh branding and marketing of commercial offerings for Tourism.

Identify, assess and manage the Risk and Compliance aspects of the Heritage and Tourism portfolio within Transnet and ensure the development of mitigating measures in response to risks that may impact strategic and operational objectives.

Monitor and ensure the building and management of sound relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Direct and manage matters emanating from governance structures and ensure that appropriate action is timeous and adequate.

Develop capacity and manage the physical and human resources required to execute the portfolio.

Establish the operational requirements to enable Tourism commercial offerings (e.g. Train systems/ hospitality sector, etc.)

Develop and implement the strategic repositioning strategy of the Blue Train.

Ensure effective management of Blue Train operations, namely the running thereof inclusive of safety and security,

maintenance, human resources and financial expenditure relating to daily operations.

Develop a business case for implementing the required service and other changes to ensure financial sustainability of the Blue Train.

Motivate and manage the required recapitalisation of the Blue Train.

Lead and co-ordinate the development and implementation of a diversity of marketing tactical plans, projects and campaigns utilising different elements of the marketing mix.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

B-degree in Marketing, Business Administration Commerce, Finance or relevant.
Postgraduate level qualification such as MBA will be an advantage.
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in business development and commercial management in a large organisation of which at
least 5 years at a managerial level.
Requirement of trust and honesty in the handling of finances as per the National Credit Act Amendment 19.
