About Allan Gray Orbis Foundation

Allan Gray Orbis Foundation was founded back in 2005 as part of Allan Gray’s objectives to contribute to Southern Africa by cultivating responsible entrepreneurship from the country. The foundations currently runs not only in South Africa, but also in Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.

 

Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship 2021

The Foundation’s Fellowship programme supports individuals by nurturing their entrepreneurship skills to create valuable businesses which will contribute to the community. The programme beneficiaries, which are known as Candidate Allan Gray Fellows will receive financial assistance for their tertiary education as well as support to develop their entrepreneurial mindset.

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation award 100 fellowships to deserving students in South Africa.

Fellowships are given within the following fields of study:

For GRAD 12 & For 1st Year Students:

  • Commerce
  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Humanities
  • Arts &
  • Health Science (Excluding Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry)

The Fellowship will pay for the full cost of university tuition, full cost of university accommodation as well as meals, books and tutor allowances, a monthly living allowance, academic support and access to an entrepreneurial and personal development programme, mentorship and access to potential postgraduate funding for graduated Candidate Fellows.

Candidate Allan Gray Fellows are not bound to any obligation and will not be required to work for the foundation after the completion of their studies. They may also seek other funding sources from other providers as long as the other providers allow them so.

The applicants will be required to study at the foundation’s partner universities:

Eastern Cape:

  • Rhodes University (RU)
  • Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMU)

Free State:

  • University of the Free State (UFS)

KwaZulu-Natal:

  • University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)

Gauteng:

  • University of Johannesburg (UJ)
  • University of Pretoria (UP)
  • University of the Witwatersrand (WITS)

Western Cape:

  • University of Cape Town (UCT)
  • University of the Western Cape (UWC)
  • TSIBA (for only 1st-year intake)
  • Stellenbosch University (SU)

 

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

GRADE 12

  • South African citizen
  • Must have a minimum of 60% in Pure Mathematics OR a minimum of 80% in Mathematical literacy for final grade 11 results
  • Must have a minimum average of 70% for final Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Below 21 years old in the year of the application
  • Applicants who wish to pursue tertiary studies in Commerce, Science (excluding Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry), Engineering, Law or Humanities at partnered university mentioned above

1ST YEAR UNIVERSITY

  • South African citizen
  • Must have a minimum average of 65% for your 2021 mid-year exam
  • Applicants who wish to pursue tertiary studies in Commerce, Science (excluding Medicine, Veterinary Science and Dentistry), Humanities, Engineering or Law at partnered university mentioned above
  • Below 22 years old in the year of their application

For the GRAD 12 Fellowship, students can apply for the fellowships using one of the following ways:

2. Offline  Application: Download and complete the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Grad 12 Folloship Applications Form. pdf

Submit a certified copy of the following required documents along with your application form:

  • ID Document
  • Final Grade 10 and Grade 11 academic report
  • Grade 12 latest academic report, if available
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Academic/Extra-curricular awards/recognition/supporting documentation obtained in Grade 10, 11 and 12
  • Stamped and signed reference from an Educator enclosed with application in a separately sealed envelope

For Grade 12 Application open on 08 February and closes on  30 April 2021
