BM-NHSP stands for Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme and is an initiative by the National Health Research Committee (NHRC). The programme is facilitated in partnership with the following organisations:

• South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC)
• National Department of Health (NDoH)
• Public Health Enhancement Fund (PHEF)

RFA: Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Programme 2022

The BH-NHSP programme was set up to train at least 1,000 Ph.D. students in health and clinical research within a decade. So the bursaries will only be awarded to students who want to pursue Ph.D.

For the academic session 2022, the area of research is CoVID-19 and its impact on diseases that are categorized as:

• Communicable or transmissible diseases
• Maternal Neonatal and Child Health
• Non-communicable diseases

Research are as like Health system preparedness and resilience to pandemic response are also considered.

People who are interested in this funding programme should be involved as health professionals in the following areas:

• Biomedical Engineering
• Dentistry
• Oral Health
• Diet
• Medical Science
• Occupational Therapy
• Optometry
• Optics
• Pharmacy
• Physiotherapy
• Psychology
• Nursing
• Speech Therapy
• Audiology

They must also be in the first year of their Ph.D. study specialising in any of the following areas:

• Biostatistics
• Data Science
• Digital Health
• Demography
• Epidemiology
• Health Economics
• Genomics/Bioinformatics
• Microbiology/Virology

The bursary will be awarded for the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme as a tax-free scholarship for full-time studies. The value will be decided on a case-by-case basis and will take into account the after-tax take-home pay. It’s calculated as per the public service professional scales. Once the amount is decided, it will not be changed further down the line till the completion. However, the SAMRC can disqualify or stop the funding to a bursar if it feels appropriate.

The bursary will commence from 1 April 2022 onwards.

Bursary Eligibility Criteria

There are certain eligibility criteria set for this bursary. Anyone applying for the funding must meet all the requirements to be considered. Failing to do so will result in cancellation of your application.

Here are the eligibility requirements for RFA: Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholars Bursary Programme:

• Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident
• Must have completed either an MBChB or Master’s degree
• Must be willing to pursue a Ph.D. degree at a recognised university from 2022 onwards
• The university must have accepted the research proposal for your Ph.D. study
• Must be currently registered with the university
• The area of research must be in line with the priority set by SAMRC
• Must hold a written commitment of participation from a university supervisor who has agreed to supervise you till the completion of the degree
• You must have secured the research funding, infrastructure, and environment for the Ph.D. project
• Must not be receiving funding from other RCD scholarship programme
• Must agree to all the terms and conditions for the scholarship programme

For the bursary, preference is given to those from designated groups, universities, or research priority areas mentioned above.

How to Apply?

If you fulfill all the eligibility requirements, move forward with the application process.

The first step is to submit an online application form. It’s a Google Docs form that asks certain questions about yourself and your current profession. It’d also ask about your research projects and university details. Complete the form and submit.

The next step is to complete the Request for Applications form. It’s a Docx form that you need to download and complete with a Word Processor.

Documents Required

• ID documents (certified by Commissioner of Oath)
• An abridged CV that lists the research outputs in the last five years along with other major achievements
• A motivational letter supporting your application
• An official letter stating the first date of registration for the degree
• Proof of ethics clearance
• A support letter describing the research funding and running cost
• An abstract of the Ph.D. proposal that contains the rationale, design, objective, feasibility, plans for research translation, information dissemination, and potential impact
• Letter of approval of your proposed research
• An abridged track record of your supervisor and their experience with publications and grants
• Payslips (not older than 3 months)
