About Canon Collins, WITS, and IEJ

The scholarship is jointly created by three organizations. Those are the Canon Collins Trust, University of the Witwatersrand, and Institute of Economic Justice.

Canon Collins Trust is a non-profit education and legal assistance trust. It has its presence in 14 countries and has helped over 4,000 students.

The University of the Witwatersrand, known as WITS, is a public research university in Johannesburg. The university is known internationally for its research projects and contribute to social justice in Africa.

Institute of Economic Justice is another research institute that produces economic data that helps policymakers in South Africa.

About the Canon Collins Scholarship for Economic Justice

The three organizations mentioned above have come together to create the Canon Collins Scholarship for Economic Justice.

The scholarship is designed to assist students financially in completing their education. More specifically, it’s intended for students who want to pursue a postgrad degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and are committed to social justice in South Africa.

For the 2022 session, the scholarship will award certain students who want to pursue a Masters of Commerce in Applied Development Economics at WITS.

Here’s what the scholarship has on offer:

• Covers the entire tuition cost for the duration of the study period. This amounts to R 120,000 or R 60,000 per academic year
• A paid internship of 6 months at the IEJ. You’ll get hands-on experience in creating economic and policy reports
• Network opportunities with like-minded and ambitious people to further your career. These are through organized events that take place throughout the year

Eligibility Criteria

To pick the candidates for the scholarship, the selection committee has laid out certain eligibility criteria. All candidates applying for the scholarship are expected to fulfill them.

The eligibility requirement for the Canon Collins Scholarship for Economic Justice are:

• Must be a citizen of either South Africa, Namibia, or Zimbabwe
• Should be residing in one of the three aforementioned countries
• Willing to study at the University of the Witwatersrand
• Must be applying for a two-year full-time Masters of Commerce in Applied Development Economics degree
• Must have completed an honours’ level academic degree with a minimum grade of no less than 75%. Or else, must be in the final year of the degree
• Must be committed to the advancement of social justice, economic development, and socio-economic rights in Africa
• Must be prepared to undergo a 6-months internship at IEJ post completion of the Masters degree

Applicants who do not fulfill any of the requirements will not be considered. Also, fulfilling all the requirements doesn’t guarantee selection either. It’s the decision of the selection committee which would be deemed final.

If you meet all of the eligibility criteria mentioned above, move forward with the application process. There are a few steps you need to complete. Although these are simple, you need to be attentive and specific.

• Submit the Online Application Form

The first step is to complete and submit the online application form. Since it’s an online form, you’re not required to download it. You’d have to fill in the details online.

The form, which can be accessed by clicking here, will ask you basic questions about your personal and academic details. Make sure to read all the guidelines before completing the form. Accuracy is essential here.

Do not leave any field blank unless otherwise indicated. Incomplete forms are rejected without further consideration.

• Submit Necessary Documents

The next step is to submit the necessary documents. These will be used to process your application and verify the details provided.

The list of documents required are:

• Official ID documents like Birth certificate, Driver’s License, or Passport
• College/university certificates
• Academic transcripts
• Latest payslips of two months, if employed

All of the above should be certified copies. Upload the documents and send them along with the application.

If selected, you’ll be asked to submit two letters of reference. One should be from your recent academic supervisor, one from your employer (if employed), or from your volunteer organization where you volunteered. Along with that, submit two academic references.
