About Council of Geoscience

Council of Geoscience or CGS is a National Science Council in South Africa that aims to promote and assist researchers in the field of Geoscience or earth science. It came into existence after the passing of The Geoscience Act, Act No. 100 of 1993, replacing the Geological Survey of South Africa.

CGS has its headquarter in Pretoria and branch offices at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Upington, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, and Durban.

The NSC offers a wide range of services, including core drilling, environmental management, mining, mineral resources development, water geoscience, among others. The organisation also promotes an inclusive culture and aims to build a better South Africa of tomorrow.

Council for Geoscience (CGS) Bursary 2022

Council for Geoscience runs a bursary programme to promote the field of earth science among students. The programme offers financial support to students who need are in need of it. For the academic session 2022, it will be awarded to current and future undergraduate students in the following fields of study:

  • Geo-informatics
  • Geophysics
  • Geochemistry
  • Hydrogeology
  • Engineering Geology
  • Economic Geology
  • Computational Geosciences
  • Mining Seismology
  • Mineral Economics
  • Remote Sensing
  • Science Communication

Postgraduate students can also apply for the bursary, provided that their research topics are considered eligible by CGS. It must be within the earth science field.

Once awarded, the bursary will cover the following expenses:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Prescribed books
  • Meals
  • Accommodation
  • Research cost

Besides the above benefits, bursars will also receive a laptop allowance. It will only be offered to first-time bursars.

All the bursars will have to partake in vacation work at CGS during their holidays. Post graduating, some students would have to work for the organisation as per the work back contract that you’d be signing before accepting the bursary.

Bursary eligibility criteria

Not everyone applying for the bursary will be selected since there are a limited number of bursaries on offer. To choose the bursars, Council for Geoscience has laid out specific eligibility criteria. Everyone applying for the funding must fulfill all the criteria to be considered. Therefore, always cross-check before applying.

The eligibility requirements for Council for Geoscience (CGS) Bursary 2022 are:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must have either completed Matriculation or currently be in Matric
  • Must be either studying or willing to pursue an undergrad course within the fields of study mentioned above
  • Must be either studying or willing to study at a recognized tertiary institution in the country
  • Must have studied Maths and Physical Science as key subjects in Matric (if currently studying in Matric)
  • Must have passed all the subjects in the current year (if pursuing your undergrad degree)
  • Must not be working anywhere as a full-time or part-time employee

Students with proven disabilities will be given preference over others.

The first step is to download and complete the CGS Full-Time Bursary Application Form 2022. The form asks certain questions about yourself and your academic performance. Complete all three pages of the application form using a PDF editor and save.

Documents required

The next step is to prepare the necessary documents for the application. These will be used for verifying the information and processing your application further. Here are the documents you’d have to prepare:

  • An application letter that states your chosen field of study
  • ID documents (must be certified copies)
  • Recent Matric results and Grade 11 final results, if currently in Matric (certified copies only)
  • Matric certificate if completed Matric (certified copies only)
  • Full academic transcript, if currently at the tertiary level
  • Updated CV

Scan all the documents and save in PDF format.
