The CSIR has a temporary vacancy for a Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Pharmaceutical Technologies research group within the Chemicals Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for the development and optimization of chemical processes through the inclusion of Design of Experiment (DoE), and integrated monitoring of continuous flow reactor systems. S/he will also support the establishment of in silico models of these systems, and will work closely with the research team within the CSIR, and external collaborators at the University of Pretoria and Imperial College London. The position is offered on a twelve-month contract basis, with possibility of extension up to three years. This position is full-time and based in Pretoria, South Africa.

Key responsibilities:

  • Implement continuous in-line and/or at-line monitoring of reactor systems, including remote monitoring of reactors through cloud-based servers, and the incorporation of the Internet of Things (IoT);
  • Improve process development and optimization protocols through the inclusion DoE;
  • Support the establishment of the “digital twin” of the integrated flow reactor system, this will include integration of CSIR sensor technology, third party monitors, data analytics, data storage and/or fluid dynamic simulations;
  • Initiate further independent research within the strategic objectives of the Cluster;
  • Supervise and/or co-supervise postgraduate students;
  • Contribute to the writing of peer reviewed journal publications, of which the successful candidate would be expected to be the lead author for at least one publication per annum; and
  • Willing to undertake both internal and external training.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A Doctoral degree in a field related to flow chemistry, process engineering, or computational modelling (direct or indirect knowledge around the principles of flow chemistry is essential);
  • Experience in open-source coding (for example Python);
  • Experience in in silico modelling of chemical systems (additional fluid dynamics and techno-economic modelling would be advantageous);
  • Clear understanding around the opportunities for incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) into complex systems (inclusion of cost-effective platforms, such as Raspberry Pii or Arduino, would be advantageous);
  • Evidence of adaptability to change in research focus would be advantageous;Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others in a research group; and
  • Clear demonstration of problem solving abilities and independent research are essential
