About the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development

A unified development initiative combining the actions of initiation, facilitation, coordination, and implementation for rural expansion, is underway by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) in South Africa.

The Department’s dynamics include corporate governance and service perfection within the boundaries of a set legal framework that has been established by DALRRD. Sustainability of land development is the purpose of the project, and its primary aim is to promote the viable production of land in rural areas. In turn, this will provide for the creation of employment for the initiation and durability of skills empowerment.

Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) External Bursaries 2021

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) awards bursaries each year to disadvantaged and impoverished persons. For the academic year 2021, they target those seeking to further their studies or pursue careers related to:

  • Agriculture
  • Rural development
  • Land reform systems

The expenses covered by the bursary include the following:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation fees
  • Cost of books
  • Cost of meals
  • Monthly allowances

Qualified participants, from poverty, stricken and rural communities, obtain the bursary while pursuing these undergraduate degrees:

  • BSc. Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering)
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.)
  • BSc. Entomology B.Sc. Food Science B.Sc. Plant Pathology
  • BSc. Viticulture and Oenology
  • BSc. Animal Science
  • BSc. Land Surveying/Geomatics
  • BSc. Town/Urban and Regional Planning
  • BSc./BA Geo-Informatics/Geographic Information Science

You are eligible to apply for the bursary when pursuing the following diploma courses:

  • National Diploma: Food Technology
  • National Diploma/B Degree: Surveying/Cartography National Diploma/BBE: Town and Regional Planning

Qualified participants taking postgraduate studies must major their projects to fields related to agriculture, land reforms, and rural development to meet application requirements. They include those who major in the following:

  • B.Tech
  • B.Sc
  • Hons. M. Tech.
  • M.Sc.
  • D.Tech.
  • Ph.D.

Successful candidates have an opportunity to be young professionals first in relevant industries, research, and institutions. They receive appointments as interns before the placement process kicks off. Each of them is to have a mentor allocated to them and awarded a monthly allowance to cater for their meals and accommodation costs.

Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) 2021 bursary application requirements

Interested applicants must satisfy the following criteria before applying for the bursary. Failure to this results in disqualification of their application.

  • Have South African citizenship
  • Must complete filling the bursary application forms provided at DARLD’s website.
  • Apply only for the fields of study listed above for consideration of your application.
  • The department contacts successful participants only by 10 March 2021 after the National Bursary Committee completes the selection process. Failure to receive any communication after means your application was unsuccessful.
  • The department does not allow faxed or e-mailed applications.
  • Late submission of applications cannot receive any consideration.
  • It is okay to apply while waiting to receive the University acceptance letter or Final results.
