The Embassy of France is providing an opportunity for students from Lesotho and Malawi to apply for this scholarship for the upcoming academic year of 2023.

Starting in September 2023, the scholarship will pay for studies in France leading to a Master’s or PhD diploma in ANY subject of study.

Additionally, the scholarship may pay for Master and PhD programmes at certain African higher education institutions.

Because they get additional financing, applicants should take into account the Master’s programmes (M2 – second year) at the University of la Réunion in France.

Note regarding the scholarship:

The two types of scholarship available:

• A scholarship, which covers all expenses including tuition (up to 5000 euros per year), return airfare to France, a monthly stipend of about 700 euros for master’s students and 1400 euros for PhD students, and specialised housing assistance from the French government worth about 150 euros per month. Additionally, scholars will get social security, first preference for student accommodation, a waiver of the visa fee, and support from Campus France Paris.
• A cost-sharing scholarship comes with all the advantages of a full scholarship, as well as a monthly allowance paid entirely or in part by a partner.

You are urged to look for alternate financial options, and students with established funding sources will receive special consideration.

According to the time needed to complete the degree, scholarships will be given for a set period to be spent in France:

• Students pursuing master’s degrees will receive scholarships for 10 to 22 months. In rare situations, you may require to submit an M2 application because master’s degrees often last two years (2nd year of the Master’s Programme). Depending on academic success after the first year of study, the French Embassy may provide a scholarship for the following year.
• Scholarships for PhD candidates will be given for a maximum of three years. You must demonstrate the development of your research after the first year of study to be eligible for funding for the second and third years.
• Scholarships will be given to PhD students with co-supervision or cotutelle for periods spent in France; the candidate must specify these durations of stay.

Candidate selection procedure:

The Advisory board will choose candidates based on the following criteria.

You will be screened and interviewed based on your files.

• Your skills and merit are based on your academic and professional backgrounds.
• The study proposal submitted by you and how well it fits with your background determine the calibre.
• PhD candidates: PhDs under joint supervision will be given preference, and the dedication of the South African and French supervisors will be considered.
• The level of foreign language skills and their suitability for the specified curriculum will also be taken into consideration.

For Confirmed winners:

• You will be expected to complete your enrollment in the study programme of your choice.
• You must take intense online French classes between February 2023 and June 2023.
• You might need to finish an internship with a French business or organisation with a South African base (depending on the opportunities and the profiles of the laureates).
• You must commit to the research project you have chosen once you arrive in France. Any alterations to the study plan must get approval from the French Embassy.
• You will have to stay in France throughout your entire study period.

Candidates on the waiting list:

• Depending on the availability, you will be pushed up the waiting list and receive a unique notification.
• You can move through with the application process and enroll in French higher education institutions.
• You must take online French classes and maybe do an internship (if you do not, you will be removed from the list).

Significant dates:

• Interviews with successful candidates will take place in November 2022.
• Final candidates will be chosen, and results will be made public, between the end of November and the beginning of December 2022.
• In South Africa, a specialised programme will launch in February 2023 and run until July 2023. (online french courses and possibly internship).
• Arrival in France in early September 2023.

Note:

• Any decisions will be final with no room for appeal.
• Please do not inquire further about the status of your application.
• Applicants will not get any ranking information on any list.
• The scholarship will immediately expire in case of any interruption in studies.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must check the eligibility criteria before applying for the scholarship. There should not be any exceptions.

• You must be a citizen of Malawi, Basotho, or South Africa.
• Your birthdate must be on or after January 1, 1992.
• You must have enrolment for pursuing a Master’s or PhD.
• You must have enrolment for pursuing studies at a French higher education institution.
• You must be planning to enroll in classes in September 2023.
• Students planning to major in science, engineering, or technology, as well as those interested in specialised programmes not offered in South Africa, may get preference.

Documents Required

You must attach all the below documents with your application form. There should not be any missing or false documents.

• Copy of your Passport
• Updated curriculum vitae and resume with the full academic transcripts.
• A letter of introduction outlining your goals and interests in the chosen academic project
• Degree transcripts (Bachelor/Master degrees)
• Transcripts from the last two academic years.

Additionally, master’s students must provide the following:

• List of the courses the applicant plans to apply for along with the application dates and tuition fees.
• Evidence of enrollment in the study programme for which you applied (between February and May/June 2023).
• Email exchanges with the French institution which is to be submitted in the course of the application process.

In addition, PhD candidates must provide the following:

• Attestation from your supervisor, signed and pledging to oversee your thesis OR
• If under co-supervision, an attestation signed by the two supervisors (French and South African) confirming their intention to oversee in both France and South Africa (must state that a cotutelle agreement will be made).
• A signed cotutelle agreement, if co-supervision is involved, and a detailed schedule of the times that will be spent in France while conducting research.
• A thorough outline of the study endeavour and a thorough work plan (2 to 3 pages long).

Documents that you may choose to provide are

• Certifications of language ability
• Cost-sharing letter of commitment from the relevant organisation
