The world-famous South African fashion designer has become well known for using his celebrity to highlight social issues, focusing mainly on women. He first stepped into this spotlight after meeting Thando Hopa, a prosecutor with the National Prosecuting Authority, whose albinism he used as the theme of his new collection. Coetzee and Hopa brought the issue of albinism into sharp focus and they have together done much in combatting the social plight of these people, plagued by superstition and discrimination, with the disease. He has also partnered with Shout, an organisation highlighting the high levels of violence facing South African women.

Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursaries

Gert-Johan Coetzee has given bursaries to foster the growth of fashion among the youth for the past seven years. It limits its chances to applicants by offering 2 bursary opportunities to students who are fashion enthusiasts. They include bursary tribe styles as the theme and specify in Subcultures.

• Fashion Design bursary
• Fashion Communication Bursary

The bursaries amount to a sum of over R170 000 within three years of study at the North West School of Design located in Klerksdorp. It also comes with additional packages to help you have an easy time growing your fashion skills.

• A sewing machine
• An overlocker sponsored by Bernina SA
• An Aspire A13-51 i5 Laptop to use within the three years of study

Successful applicants are to become interns at Gert Johan Coetzee’s studio for a complete minimum of two internship programs. They do this by studying to increase their exposure.

Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursaries selection process

The selection process takes the following order. Note of each of them to help you not miss out.

1. Charles Oosthuizen of North West School of Design contacts semi-finalists through telephone after the selection process.
2. Semi-finalists are to answer questions asked by Gert-Johan Coetzee in a two-minute video alongside completing an assignment. They are to submit them to [email protected] through WETRANSFER.
3. The final competition includes 10 shortlisted finalists to compete for the bursary.
4. These finalists should buy a viewing ticket for the Platinum Fashion Festival 2020 Digital Event. The announcement of those who secured the bursary is to take place at the North West School of Design.

Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursaries Requirements and Eligibility

Before beginning the application process, applicants are to satisfy the following minimum requirements for the bursary application. Failure to meet any of these application requirements leads to the disregard of your application.

• You must be a citizen of South Africa
• Speak fluent English
• Study Matric at the moment or completed studying it
• Ready to start studying at the North West School of Design beginning January 2021
• You are open to the idea of studying at the North West School of Design while living in Klerksdorp within your three years of study
• You must be a dedicated individual with a positive attitude and a great passion
• Have natural fashion instincts
• Be hardworking

Fashion Design Bursary

• Include two style tribe fashion designs with included fashion sketches presented in A4 size, color-filled, and each should be less than 5mb.
• Provide a Mood Board with a maximum of 5mb capacity having a collage filled with information on subcultures and aesthetics that inspired your designs.

Fashion Communication Bursary

• A fashion essay of not more than 200 words based on any style of tribe
• Provide a Mood Board with a maximum of 5mb capacity having a collage filled with information on subcultures and aesthetics that inspired your designs.

Application Closing Date

The closing date for the bursary competition ends on   9 October 2020 , whereby semi-finalists will be selected by Gert-Johan Coetzee and telephonically contacted by North West School of Design by the 16^th of October 2020
