About Gibela

Gibela was initially established as an association between Alstom, New Africa Rail, and Ubumbano Rail. Today, it is a joint French and South African manufacturer of railway rolling stocks. Gibela is a fully black-empowered company that offers bursaries to students who meet their qualifying criteria. Gibela grants these bursaries for 1-year at a time. The students who receive the bursaries can renew them every year, depending on their academic performance.

Gibela Bursary 2021

The bursaries will go to students within the following fields of study:

For TVET students:

  • Control and Instrumentation Technicians
  • Boiler-Makers
  • Fitters and Turners
  • Electricians
  • Millwrights
  • Mechanics
  • Plumbers
  • Pattern-Makers
  • Welders
  • Vehicle-Builders

The bursary for TVET students will provide coverage for tuition fees and an allowance for books.

For University and University of Technology Students:

  • Computer Science
  • Accounting
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Logistics Management
  • Supply Chain
  • Metallurgical Engineering

For University and University of Technology students, the bursary will provide coverage for tuition fees, meals, accommodations, and a book allowance.

Applicants who qualify for the bursaries will get contacted. Applicants who don’t receive any notification by 26 March 2021 should regard their application as unsuccessful.

Gibela Bursary 2021 Eligibility and Requirements

Before applying for the bursary, interested applicants must satisfy the following entry criteria.

For TVET Students:

  • Must be a citizen of South Africa
  • Must have completed Matric with a minimum of level 4 for Science, English, and Mathematics
  • Must be currently studying or intends to study within one of the fields of study mentioned above
  • Must be currently studying or accepted to study at one of the South African Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions
  • Current N3 or N4 students may apply
  • Must have a strong academic record
  • Must be in financial need

For University and University of Technology Students:

  • Must be a citizen of South Africa
  • Must have completed Matric with a minimum of level 5 for English and a minimum of level 6 for Physical Science, Accounting, and Mathematics
  • Must be currently studying or intends to study within one of the fields of study mentioned above
  • Must be currently studying or accepted to study at one of the South African Universities or Universities of Technology
  • Current 1st and 2nd-year students may apply
  • Must have a strong academic record
  • Must be in financial need

Failure to comply with all of these requirements will lead to the application getting disregarded.

How to Apply and Application Details

Applicants must submit clear copies of the following supporting documents.

  • Certified copy of a photo ID from South Africa
  • Certified copies of the applicant’s complete academic record
  • A brief Curriculum Vitae
  • For TVET students, proof of acceptance for admission from a South African Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution printed on the institution’s letterhead
  • For University and University of Technology students, proof of acceptance for admission from a South African University or University of Technology in South Africa printed on the university’s letterhead
