About HCI

HCI or Hosken Consolidated Investments Limited is a black community-focused investment holding company. It invests in those companies that it believes will benefit the black community. Currently, HCI is a majority shareholder in South Africa Clothing and Textile Workers Union Investment Group (SACTWU). Besides that, it invests in sectors like hotels, leisure, media and broadcasting, mining, real estate, among others.

HCI has a not-for-profit independent trust named the HCI Foundation. It is owned and operated by the HCI Board of Directors, certain employees from companies that HCI subsidises, and experts from outside HCI. It aims to uplift the unprivileged communities of South Africa and the people.

HCI Foundation Bursary 2022

The HCI Foundation offers bursaries to a certain number of students every year. HCI Foundation bears up to 75% of the tuition fees depending on the need.

For the academic session 2022, the bursaries will be awarded to two groups of students. These are:

• Current HCI bursary recipients who have already applied and received funding from HCI Foundation in the current academic year
• Students pursuing an Honours or Postgraduate Diploma at one of the listed universities

The universities considered for bursary funding for 2022 are the following:

• University of Witwatersrand
• University of Pretoria
• University of Johannesburg
• University of Cape Town
• University of the Western Cape
• University of Stellenbosch
• Rhodes University
• University of KwaZulu-Natal
• University of Free State
• Nelson Mandela University
• North-West University

The value of the bursary is decided on a case-by-case basis with a maximum funding of up to R 38,000 per year. Bursars will receive the funding directly into their student’s fee account. The amount should only be used for paying the tuition fees. This bursary will not cover other expenses like accommodation, textbooks, meals, and transport.

There’s no work-back contract required for the bursary. But the students are expected to get involved voluntarily in community projects, mentoring programmes, and tutoring camps. After graduating, they’d be asked to survey and attend workshops throughout the year. Certain bursars may also become eligible for the Graduate Development Programme and learn valuable skills.

Bursary Eligibility Criteria

Not everyone applying for the bursary is selected. HCI Foundation has laid out specific eligibility criteria that everyone applying for the funding should meet first. Failing to do so will result in the cancellation of your application.

The eligibility requirements for HCI bursary 2022 are:

• Must be either a South African citizen or permanent resident or hold a refugee or asylum seeker status
• Must not be older than 35 years at the time of application closing date
• Must be pursuing a full-time degree
• Must not be studying at a TVET College
• The gross family income should not exceed R 38,000
• Must not be receiving benefits from a full cost bursary or large partial bursary (partial bursars, NSFAS, or students with loans may apply)
• If you’re a current HCI bursary recipient, must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at a recognised University or University of Technology
• If you’re a new applicant, then you must be pursuing an Honours or Postgraduate Diploma at one of the aforementioned universities

How to Apply?

If you fulfill all the eligibility requirements, move forward with the application process and apply for the bursary.

To get started, you must submit the HCI Foundation online application form. The form has two phases. In the first phase, you’ll be completing the online application form. In the second phase, you’ll have to complete an additional form that’d be sent to your email address. The first form asks basic questions about yourself and your contact details. Make sure you provide the correct email address and phone number. Otherwise, you’ll not get the second form.

Documents Required

When submitting your online application, you’d have to prepare and submit the following documents:

• ID documents for South African citizens
• Proof of permanent residency, refugee, or asylee status
• Full academic results, including latest results (on institution letterhead)
• Proof of monthly household income for the past three months (submit payslips if employed; bank statements if self-employed; affidavit if not employed)
• A 550-750 words motivational letter supporting your application (describe personal goals, ethics, and qualities)
• Proof of registration for new applicants

Please submit certified copies of all the above documents.

Closing Date

The last date to apply for the HCI bursary is 15 November 2021.
