About the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR)

South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) was founded in 1929 as an institution that conducts research and policy organisation with regards to the individual civil rights free from unnecessary government, political, and bureaucratic intrusion. SAIRR uses rigorous analysis and hard factual data to produce publications that can be used by politicians, government officials, and business leaders to select policies that will benefit the South African population.

Some of IRR successful influence includes the delay and later halting of legislation that would give the government the power to take people’s home or business, revision of BEE regulations, prevention of regulations that weakens the investors’ protections, stopping the populist policy which gives limited political choices for voters and cracking down of convicted criminals employed in SAPS.

SAIRR Bursaries

Since 1935, The IRR has started funding thousands of South African education, which includes well-known people such as Nelson Mandela, Marina Xaba-Mokoena, Philip Kgosana and Nonceba Lubanga.

IRR Bursaries will be awarded to students in various fields of study, who are studying towards a degree or diploma qualification. Please note that postgraduate and Honours funding is not currently available.

The IRR bursary programme have delivered more than 3700 professionals in the law, arts, medicine, health sciences and dentistry, business and commerce, management, scientific, education, and engineering industries that resulted to the major contribution to South Africa’s economic empowerment.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:

• Republic of South Africa citizens
• In Matric OR have completed Matric.
• Studying (or intend on studying) towards a first degree/ diploma qualification (no postgraduate
  students will be funded),
• Current students or applicants who intend to study for a first degree/diploma at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
• Good academic records
• Proven financial need

How to Apply and Application Details

• Complete the online application.
• The Institute will review all completed online applications and only short-listed applicants will be communicated.
• Short-listed applicants will be provided with a list of required documents for completion of the application process. Required documents must be completed on or before 16 November.
• Final decisions for the bursary recipients will be conducted by the Institute’s selection committee and results will be released by 15 February. Selected applicants will be notified of the awarded bursaries.
