About Sasol Agriculture Trust

Sasol Agriculture Trust is a Trust set up by Sasol to improve the state of agriculture in South Africa. Sasol is a global integrated chemicals and energy company, and one of the largest publicly traded companies in South Africa.

The Trust was set up in 2012 with the goal of:

• Improving the sustainability and competitiveness of the agriculture industry of South Africa
• Offering support services to enterprise development projects
• Supporting initiatives, education and training programmes that would benefit the farmers and the industry as a whole

Sasol has donated R30 million to the Trust since 2012.

Sasol Agriculture Trust Bursary 2022

Every year, the Sasol Agriculture Trust offers bursaries to a certain number of students. Known as the Sasol Agriculture Trust Bursary scheme, it aims to help disadvantaged students complete their education in agricultural sciences so they can contribute to the industry.

For the academic year 2022, the Trust will award bursaries to students pursuing Masters and Doctoral studies.

Some of the fields of study the Masters and Doctoral degrees can be in are:

• Agronomy
• Agricultural Economics
• Agricultural Engineering
• Agricultural Meteorology
• Agricultural Writers
• Conservative Agriculture
• Livestock Science
• Plant Biochemistry
• Plant Breeding
• Plant Entomology
• Plant Nematology
• Plant Pathology
• Plant Physiology
• Plant Virology
• Weed Science
• Soil Science
• Data Science

Other fields of study may also be eligible, provided it’s related to the agriculture sector as determined by the Trustees.

The bursary amount granted to each student will depend on the level of study.

MSc and Masters by Dissertation students will receive a maximum funding of R95,000 per annum for two years. Students pursuing PhD and Doctoral Research studies will receive R125,000 per annum for two years.

Bursars will receive the first installment in January of 2022 for their studies. The subsequent installments will be paid according to the progress report submitted by the students and their supervisors.

After graduating, bursars must agree to work in the agricultural industry for a time period equal to that of the bursary benefit received.

Bursary Eligibility Criteria

To be selected for the bursary programme, you must first fulfill the eligibility requirements. Since the bursaries are limited in number and the Trust receives hundreds of applications, it rejects those that fail to meet all the criteria.

The eligibility requirements for the Sasol Agriculture Trust bursary scheme are:

• Must be a South African citizen
• Must have completed Matriculation
• Must be studying full-time at a recognized tertiary institution
• Must be pursuing a Masters or Doctoral degree in one of the fields of study mentioned above
• Must not be receiving benefits from any other bursary or scholarship (unless approved by the Trust)
• Must be willing to conduct a thesis on a topic approved by the Trust
• Must be willing to work in the South African agricultural industry after completion of studies
• Must have agreed to all the policies and procedures laid out by the Sasol Agriculture Trust

Fulfilling all the requirements, however, doesn’t guarantee to fund. It’s at the sole discretion of the Trust.

How to Apply?

Eligible candidates should move forward with the application process. It’s an online process, and there’s no need to send in physical hardcopies. It’s a short process as well, and you’ll be done within an hour. But you must be diligent.

The first step is to complete the Sasol Agricultural Trust bursary online application form. The form has six sections, and you need to complete the first four. Of the other two, one is a legal undertaking you must agree on, and the other is a checklist. Answer all the questions accurately without typo errors.

Documents Required

The next step is to scan and upload the necessary documents, which are:

• ID documents or Passport (no older than three months)
• Recent color ID photograph
• Updated Curriculum Vitae
• Proof of tertiary registration and fee statement (must be on institution letterhead)
• Full academic record including the most recent results (must be on institution letterhead)
• A brief on your proposed research
• A motivation letter supporting your application

Closing Date

The last date to apply for the Sasol Agriculture Trust Bursary is 30 September 2021.
