About South African Translators’ Institute

The main objective of the South African translators’ Institute (SATI) is to promote the interests of the country’s translation profession. This objective is very important in the context of modern South Africa since the country has 11 official languages. Aside from this objective, SATI also works towards the establishment of a culture of multilingualism and the development of a traditional translation and the interpreting of the 11 languages of South Africa.

To give a practical expression to the idea of multilingualism requires the use of properly-trained and competent language workers like interpreters and translators. Presently, the Translators’ Institute of South Africa doesn’t have an adequate number of trained language workers. Because of this, they decided to collect funds to used to assist deserving interpreting and translator students, especially in the languages, which have been previously marginalized.

South African Translators’ Institute Bursary 2021

For the year 2021, SATI will make one scholarship valued at R10,000 available. Since SATI has limited funding for bursaries, it becomes important that this goes to students who have a high chance of succeeding in their studies and who are most likely to make a positive contribution to the interpreting or translator profession upon completion of their qualification. Although the financial need of the student is a primary concern, applicants to the bursary will also get assessed based on their marks in school.

Other factors considered in the selection process are the applicant’s previous SATI awards, language combinations, and professional engagement. SATI isn’t in the position to offer bursaries that cover the complete costs of a study course. Because of this, the Institute requires any successful applicant to prove that with the SATI bursary, they will be in a position to pay the total amounts relative to their course for the year before they get the bursary. Moreover, the applicants must also disclose details of any bursaries that they expect to receive or have already received.

Students should also note that the SATI bursary will only get paid out after giving proof of registration for the course and for the year submitted. The bursaries will get paid in two tranches: 50% at the start of the year and the other 50% in the 2nd semester, upon the submission of the 1st-semester results of the student. The results should show an average mark of 65% for all subjects in language practice.

South African Translators’ Institute Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

The SATI bursaries are only available to students in their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year of studies and in financial need. Applicants who qualify for the bursary must submit an affidavit that confirms they have not received other funding or bursaries that cover the same expenses as the SATI bursary. Moreover, the applicants also have to prove that they have access to other funding that will cover the rest of their fees and expenses for the year. Also, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled at a tertiary institution in South African for formal training in interpreting, translation, or other aspects of language practice.
• Be in the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of an undergraduate qualification in interpreting, translation, or language practice.
• Have achieved an average grade of 65% and above for all subjects in language practice in the year 2020.
• Have not failed any of the subjects that they have registered for in the year that they receive the bursary.
• Be a citizen of South Africa
• Work in combinations of the official languages.

• A certified copy of your academic qualifications (if applicable)
• A certified copy of your full tertiary academic record
• Proof of registration at tertiary institution for the current year of study
• Proof of registration at tertiary institution for 2021
• Proof of access to funds to cover other expenses NOT covered by the SATI bursary
• Details of other awards/ funding received or expect to receive
• An affidavit confirming that you are not in possession of any other bursary awards/ funding that will cover the expenses that the SATI bursary would (only if successfully selected)
