About SUBTROP

The South African Subtropical Growers’ Association is a group that was formed to promote the farming, marketing, and distribution of fruits like mangoes, avocados, and litchis. The association also strives to provide its members with services including market technical, liaison, technical and economic information, research coordination, etc.

The SUBTROP functions through its head office in Limpopo town, Tzaneen. It also has satellite offices throughout the subtropical region to ensure that it can efficiently reach out to growers.

SUBTROP is a union of South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA), The South Africa Mango Growers’ Association (SAMGA), and South African Litchi Growers’ Association (SALGA).

Overview of SUBTROP Lindsey Milne Bursary

Dr. DL Milne is known for his endless contributions to the subtropical fruit industry. The Subtrop Lindsey Milne bursary program is named after him and dedicated in his honor.  Dr. Milne contributed to the subtropical fruit industry in many ways. He worked as an employee in the Institute for Tropical and Subtropical Fruit, General Manager of Westfalia, and post retirement, he served as Chairman of the Subtrop group.

This bursary program is founded to assist those students who wish to make a career in the Subtropical fruit industry in South Africa.

The bursary program is valid for one year however, it can be renewed the next year if the student exhibits good academic performance. The amount of bursary awarded to students depends on their needs and can be reviewed annually.

Obligation and Selection

Bursary recipients will be required to enter a contractual agreement with Subtrop. Under the obligation of this agreement, students will be required to work for Subtrop for a time equivalent to the bursary award.

However, if no position is available then the student is under no obligation to Subtrop. If there is no position vacant with Subtrop, students will be assisted in finding a placement with various members of the growers’ association.

Students receiving the bursary shall focus their seminars and projects on subtropical crops like avocados, mango, and litchi whenever possible.

Selection of the students eligible for the bursary will be made by a panel of judges. Every student will receive feedback/communication on the outcome of their application at the earliest.

If a student is unable to pass the course for which bursary was granted he/she will be required to pay back the bursary. The payment can be done over a period of time equal to the length of the bursary. The repayment shall commence at the beginning of the year after the year in which the student received the bursary.

Bursary Eligibility Criteria

Following are the criteria required to be eligible for receiving the bursary. Failure to meet the eligibility criteria can lead to the rejection of the application.

  • Students must be South African citizens
  • Applicants must be studying towards BSc (Agriculture) degree with a major in Horticulture Science and related fields or agriculture Economics.
  • Students must be studying at recognized tertiary institutions

Documents Required

While submitting the form (email or upload) students are required to attach the following documents. If any of the documents are missing the bursary application can be rejected.

  • Certified ID document
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate
  • A motivational letter stating why you deserve the bursary
  • University academic record on tertiary letterhead
  • Curriculum Vitae (2 pages max)
  • Details of any other awards or bursaries that a student may be holding
  • 3 references with full name, relationship with a student, email address, and contact details.
