About SIFTE

SIFTE, or the Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education, is one of the oldest private sector Trust Funds in South Africa, having been established in 1965. The aim was to promote education and sustainable practices within the country’s sugarcane industry. Today, it organises and funds a range of educational programmes that are meant for the better of the industry and the growing communities. Besides that, SIFTE also funds school buildings and learners via bursaries.

The non-profit organisation is funded and managed by several independent trustees who seek the betterment of the sugarcane industry and the country as a whole.

Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) Bursary 2022

SIFTE has a deep focus on education and has been funding several educational programmes over the past four decades. From study assistance programmes to early childhood development programmes, SITFE has helped over 10,000 students to date.

The SITFE bursary is meant for students who are pursuing their qualifications in Agriculture, Engineering, or Sciences.

For the academic session 2022, SITFE will only select candidates from KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga areas.

They can be studying at any public university, university of technology, or at one of the two agricultural colleges in South Africa:

• Owen Sithole College of Agriculture
• Cedara College of Agriculture

The value of the bursary will be decided on a case-by-case basis. Selection will depend on matric and the latest academic results. There is also an interview round where students would have to demonstrate proper communication skills. The organisation will declare the list of bursars no later than 28 February 2022.

Eligibility Criteria For The SITFE Bursary

There are certain eligibility criteria laid out by SITFE for this bursary programme. Anyone applying for the funding must fulfill all of the requirements. Failing to do so will lead to the rejection of your application. Therefore, always cross-check the criteria before applying.

The eligibility requirements for Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) Bursary 2022 are:

• Must reside within the sugarcane growing provinces, which are KwaZulu-Natal or Mpumalanga
• Must have registered themselves for a qualification in the field of agriculture, science, or engineering. If not, they must be children of sugarcane farm workers (such candidates can be in any field of study).
• Must belong to the “Missing Middle” group with a household income between R 350,000 and R 600,000
• The family income must come from the sugarcane growing areas and not anywhere else

Fulfilling all of the requirements does not guarantee funding. Preference is given to applicants in their first year of study. Those with superior academic performance will also get priority over others.

Those eligible to apply should move forward with the application process and apply for Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) Bursary.

To get started, you must download and complete the Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE) Bursary Application Form.

The application has six sections, and you need to complete all of them. Read through the instructions before starting.

Documents Required

You’d then have to attach the following documents along with the application form:

• Certified ID documents
• Final grade 12 trial and Matric statement of result. If unavailable or have registered at the institute, submit the final Tertiary exam results
• Proof of registration at the university, university of technology, tertiary institution, agricultural college
• Proof of household income (payslips, affidavit confirming income or unemployment, pension receipts)
• Death certificate, if parents are deceased
• Proof of connection to the sugarcane industry, if applicable
