Sustainable Energy Development Scholarship 2023

The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) offers the Education for Sustainable Energy Development (ESED) Scholarship Program to exceptional students from developing countries pursuing master’s level studies in sustainable energy development in UK, USA, Canada, etc. 

The ESED scholarship program aims to inspire the next generation of innovators and thinkers to create a sustainable future and foster globally-oriented practitioners and researchers in the climate, energy, and electricity sector.

The program awards scholarships to approximately a dozen students each year, providing a maximum value of 10,000 USD per year for up to 2 years of study.

Eligibility Criteria 

The applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible for this scholarship.

  • Pursue master’s-level studies related to sustainable energy development, such as zero-carbon energy, electric transportation, smart grids, advanced electricity technologies, energy storage, law, public policy, political science, economics, etc.
  • Be enrolled in full-time studies for at least one complete school year (two or three semesters) starting from mid to late 2023.
  • You must possess citizenship of a country recognized by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD as an official recipient of development aid and categorized as a developing nation.
  • Have a commitment to contributing to their home country’s development after completing their studies.
  • Demonstrate exceptional academic performance by achieving excellent grades that place you within the top 20% of your class.
  • Show a strong commitment to the development of zero-carbon energy.
  • Have a record of active participation and contribution to their community.
  • Display a strong determination to enhance your knowledge and understanding.
  • GSEP will dedicate a portion of its scholarships to students pursuing master’s studies at universities in developing countries, as part of its goal to support local expertise building in developing nations. The academic panel ensures that each year’s selection reflects geographic and gender diversity.

The academic committee ensures that the annual selection maintains diversity in terms of geography and gender.

How to Apply?

Applicants must apply online by creating an account online at the official site and filling out the online application form

Note: Completing the scholarship application may require a few hours if you have all the necessary information readily available. You can save your progress and resume the application later. Prepare all the required documents before applying.

It’s crucial to note that only applications through our online application platform are accepted, and applications sent via email or mail will not be considered.

Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a confirmation email acknowledging the receipt of your application. The selection process will be completed by the end of May, and all applicants will be notified of the results via email.

Documents Required

You must provide an electronic copy of the following documents to ensure a successful application. In case the original documents are not in English, certified translations that include the translator’s name and a copy of the original (untranslated) document are required.

  • Birth certificate or passport (only the photo page) confirming citizenship in a developing country.
  • A detailed curriculum vitae that includes your education, awards, work experience (if applicable), and volunteer participation and/or extracurricular activities.
  • An admission letter from your chosen university program. Note here that only the admission letter from your top choice of university program is acceptable.
    • If you’re applying for the second year of a two-year program, proof of enrollment and a copy of your official admission letter should be included in a single document.
  • Course outline for your intended master’s degree program in PDF format or as a link.
  • Transcripts of all your previous universities.
    • If you are applying for the second year of a two-year master’s program, include your transcript for the first year as well.
  • Provide Two reference letters or forms:
    • You must provide at least one academic reference from a professor or faculty member at your current or previous university who can attest to your academic abilities. The Academic Reference Form should be filled out in English and duly signed by the referee.
    • To provide a second reference, you may choose either another academic referee (explained previously) or a personal referee. If you opt for a personal referee, they should be someone (such as an supervisor, employer, supervisor, coach, or mentor) who can attest to your unique qualities or interests that make you a deserving candidate for the scholarship. However, the personal referee should not be a family member. If you choose a personal referee, the reference letter must be written in English on official letterhead, dated, signed by the referee, and include your full name.

Closing Date 

The application deadline for the 2023 scholarship is 7 April 2023 at 5 pm Eastern Time.
