Position Title : Ordinary Seafarer

Position Purpose:

To serve as a (trainee rating) positioned in a capacity of OS (Deck or Engine) on a tug, Launch, Pilot Boat, Work Boat or Floating Crane operating within the confines of the port operations area.

Be responsible for the safe and efficient handling and/or operation of ropes, wires and other deck and/or engine equipment during the shipping operations.

To perform maintenance duties on the deck, accommodation, tank, void and engine room spaces of the crafts including general cleaning and housekeeping thereby ensuring a safe, reliable and professional delivery of marine fleet services to the Client.

Position outputs:

  • To safely and efficiently handle ropes, wires, winches, capstans and other deck equipment during shipping operations.
  • To observe and participate in the maintenance duties on deck and/or engine room spaces of crafts including (but not limited

to) general maintenance and spot chipping of corroded spaces and fendering equipment.

  • To observe and participate in maintenance of craft equipment, including (but not limited) general wash down of internal and

external spaces, decks, superstructure, hull and/or engine room and workshop spaces.

  • To perform hygienic cleaning of all domestic areas including cabins, accommodation, heads and galley thereby ensuring

safe and hygienic leaving conditions are maintained at all times.

  • To observe and participate in spicing of ropes and/or wires and making up of heaving lines as and when required.
  • To observe and participate in routine testing of deck and/or engine room equipment, under the supervision of either Master

and/or CMEO.

  • To observe and participate in emergency drills and procedures in line with safety requirements and best practices.
  • To observe and participate in berthing duties (where safe to do so), moor/unmoor the cart alongside quays and rig

gangways for safe access to the vessel.

  • To observe and comply with all safe working instructions and procedures, report any non-conformances to the vessel

officers (CMEO and/or Master).

  • To carry out reasonable instructions as directed by vessel officers on-board (CMEO and/or Master) as determined from

time-to-time for the safe and efficient running of the vessel.

  • To store and secure all equipment in designated areas for safety of the vessel.
  • To dispose of waste in designated areas/bins.
  • To maintain at all times that relevant personal qualifications and certificates of competencies are valid and records are kept

safely and readily available when required.

  • To observe at all times the safety standards are followed thereby ensuring promotion of safety and wellbeing culture

on-board the vessel.

  • To understand and obey all emergency signals and act accordingly.
  • To perform fire and emergency patrols and report accordingly.

Qualifications & Experience:

Qualifications
Grade 10 school certificate.
Certificate of proficiency as ordinary seaman.

Minimum Years Relevant Experience:
6 months experience in marine operations.
