The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a leading tertiary institution in South Africa. Comprising of multiple faculties, it produces bright and skilled students to join the South African workforce. The university also has interests in research and innovation, because of which UCT is ranked first in Africa by Times Higher Education and several other agencies.

Harry Crossley Foundation was set up to honor Mr. Harry Crossley. He was an immigrant from the UK who came to South Africa in 1950 and actively invested in the stock market. Prior to his death, he set up the Harry Crossley Foundation that offers bursaries and grants to selected students.

University of Cape Town: the Harry Crossley Foundation Research Fellowships 2022

The UCT: Harry Crossley Foundation Research Fellowship programme is for postgraduate students. It is available for Honours, Master’s, Doctoral degree studies.

The foundation accepts all the fields of study with two exceptions: Religious Studies and Political Studies.

For the academic year 2022, any student registering for the first year at the University of Cape Town may apply. The structure is as follows:

• One year funding of R 95,000 for Honours students.
• Two-year funding of R 100,000 for Masters students. It is available to both the first and second year students. The scholarship is renewable based on satisfactory academic performance in the current year and the availability of funds.
• Three year funding of R 140,000 for Doctoral students. It is available to first, second, and third year students. The scholarship for Doctoral students is also renewable based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Fellowship Eligibility Criteria

To select candidates for the scholarship, the foundation has laid out certain eligibility criteria. Everyone applying for the funding must fulfill all the criteria. Failing to do so will result in the rejection of the application.

So before you apply, cross-check with the following eligibility requirements for the Harry Crossley Foundation Research Fellowship:

• Must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident at the time of applying
• Must be willing to pursue a Honours, Masters, or Doctoral degree in 2022
• Must be willing to study full-time since part-time students are not eligible
• Must have either registered or willing to register at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for the first year of study in 2022
• Must have scored no less than 70% aggregate (GPA) in their Bachelors or Honours degree
• Must not be currently in the fourth year of an undergraduate qualification
• Must not be studying towards one of the following qualifications:
  • LLB
  • Postgraduate certificate or diploma in Religious Studies and Political Studies
• Must not be employed for more than 20 hours per week

Fulfilling all the eligibility criteria, however, does not guarantee funding. That’s because the number of scholarships is limited, and the number of students applying outnumbers it.

Preference is given to those with strong academic performance. The list published by the foundation will be considered final.

How to Apply?

If you meet all the eligibility criteria, move forward with the application process. It’s a short process, and you’ll be done within an hour. But you shouldn’t rush through it and take your own time.

The first step you need to do is download and complete the Harry Crossley Foundation Research Fellowship Application Form. It’s a DOCX form, and you’d need a Word Processor to open and fill out the details. The form has five sections, and you need to complete all of them.

Documents Required

Next, you need to scan the documents necessary for the scholarship, which are:

• Letter of Application (on an A4 page)
• For Masters and Doctoral students, they must submit a statement agreeing to organise and plan at least one seminar programme per degree
• Academic transcripts (attaching certificates not required)
• Updated CV (on an A4 page)
• Two academic references from people who’ve taught or supervised you
• Proof of acceptance (or provisionary acceptance) into the tertiary institution from the Academic department
