About DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development

The NRF implements a new Postgraduate Financial Funding Policy in which postgraduate funding allocations will get supported by the organization’s principles. Around or before the start of the Academic Year, the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development considers grant proposals, post-doctoral funding, or post-graduate applications. For 2021, the NRS is in the process of changing its bursary application process. The deadline for the submission of applications is much earlier.

DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development Bursaries 2021

Each year, the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development awards bursaries to high-performing Doctoral and Masters students and Post-doctoral fellows who wish to do research that falls under one of the four cross-cutting or thematic areas of the Centre of Excellence.

Postgraduate bursaries and funding for post-doctoral fellowships

  • Master’s students are funded for two years at R70 000 a year
  • Doctoral students are funded for three years at R100 000 a year
  • Post-Doctoral Fellows are funded for three years at R200 000 a year

Opportunity Grants are approximately valued at R150,000 for two years. These will support activities that promote inter-disciplinary meetings, networking, journal publications, joint writing, and the like. These activities may include inter-institutional or inter-disciplinary sessions at seminars or conferences with stakeholders and funders, special journal issues, and dissemination activities.

Accelerator Grants are approximately valued at R300,000 for two years This will support research activities that advance the Centre’s goals. These grants will fund activities to initiate research and networks in the thematic areas and other activities that will advance inquiry in the theme and lead to further opportunities and research grants. Included in these activities are meetings with policy stakeholders and funders, joint publications, dissemination activities, reviews on cross-disciplinary topics, and the like.

Eligibility and Requirements

Applicants who qualify for the bursaries and their supervisors will sign performance agreements with the Centre of Excellence. These agreements list the following obligations:

  • Master’s students should fulfill all of the requirements for their degree within 2 years and have a minimum of 1 co-authored paper in a peer-reviewed journal accepted for publication
  • Doctoral students should fulfill all of the requirements for their degrees within 3 years and have a minimum of 2 1st-authored papers published or accepted for publication
  • Post-Doctoral Fellows should have a minimum of 2 co- or 1st-authored papers accepted for publication, published, or in-press in each year of their 3-year fellowship
