About Rhodes Trust

Established in 1902 as willed by Cecil Rhodes and succeeding Acts of Parliament, the Rhodes Trust is an educational charity that provides support to scholars from 14 geographic regions as they pursue their studies at the University of Oxford. The Trust is based at Rhodes House, which is part of the University.

Rhodes Trust Scholarships for Southern Africa 2022

The Rhodes Scholarships is considered as the oldest and foremost fellowship in the world and has been supporting scholars since 1903. Close to 1,000 young South African students have been given the opportunity to receive funding as they pursue their postgraduate qualification at Oxford University.

The scholarship grant covers study-related expenses and provides a stipend for a period of two to three years in pursuit of any postgraduate programme offering at Oxford. About 20% of Rhodes scholars are black, half of which are black indigenous, or  people of color. This is in line with Oxford’s goal of expanding the diversity of its postgraduate population, particularly its Black student populace. As of 2020, 19 African students are chosen each year to receive a scholarship grant, with the aim of increasing this number to 32. Rhodes Thrust is continuously working to increase the endowment to be able to support more scholarships in East and West Africa.

Scholarship Requirements and Eligibility

• South African students aged 19 and have not passed their 25th birthday
• Applicants 25 years old and above must have completed qualification within the last two years
• Special accommodations will be given to MBBCh or MBChB graduates
  • Must apply in their 2nd year of internship or community service year
  • Would not have passed 28th birthday by 1 October 2022

How to Apply and Application Details

Eligible candidates will need to prepare and submit the following during the application process:

• Certified copy of the following documents:
  • Birth certificate
  • Valid ID document or passport
  • If not born in SA, submit support documents validating legal permanent residency, citizenship, or refugee status
  • School leaving certificate
• Official academic transcript from the university indicating grades achieved
• Non-native English speakers will need to check the English language requirements of the University  by clicking here
• A comprehensive CV showing the applicant’s academic qualifications, scholarships, awards, leadership positions, employment positions, participation in student, community, volunteer, or political activities, as well as any musical, athletic, and cultural achievements (maximum of two A4 pages, or 12pt font size, long)
  Note: Refrain from including your photo in your CV as it should showcase your achievements. Any false entries on your CV will disqualify your application.
•  A coloured, head-and-shoulder photo in jpg format
• A 750-word academic statement of study that talks about:
  • Reasons for pursuing studies at the University of Oxford
  • First and second choice of study course, including reasons for pursuing said courses
  • You are able to satisfy the admission/application requisites of the qualification
  • If intending to pursue a DPhil qualification, a quick outline of your prospective research area, how it benefits your future career path. Include the Department where you wish to conduct the  study
• A 1,000-word personal  statement talking about:
  • Who you are
  • What’s important to you
  • Your general activities and interests
  • Your goals and priorities
  • Your contributions and hopes for the community and the world
• A list of six people as your referees, all of whom are willing to submit references on your behalf
  • At least four referees must be your undergraduate or postgraduate professors and are able to provide detailed comments about your academic performance as well as how you will perform if accepted at Oxford. It is also important to note that these references may be used to become part of the application study at the University
  • The remaining referees should be able to attest to your character and/or participation in extra-curricular or leadership activities
  • The ideal referee must know you well and not in a superficial way. The scholarship committee prefers referees who are not relatives, peers, or personal friends; otherwise, the connection must be made clear in the reference letter
  • Your choice of referees is critical to your application, so be sure to choose highly qualified referees
  • Failure to provide the right number of referees will result in disqualification
  • Make sure to have your referees registered in the application form early to allow enough time for their reference letter
  • The deadline for submission of the reference letters is 11:59 SAST, 14 September 2021
  • Your referees may be given a call  for more information
• Do not submit certificates, documents, links  or testimonials other than those requested
