About Samancor Chrome

In 1975, Amcor Ltd. and SA Manganese Ltd. merged to form Samancor Chrome. Before the merger, Amcor Ltd. was mining mineral deposits and converting the minerals into ferroalloys for use in the steel industry, while SA Manganese Ltd. was mining manganese. With an annual production of around 1 million metric tons of ferrochrome, the company is the second largest ferrochrome producer in the world.

The current owners of the company are Samancor Chrome Holdings Proprietary Limited. Previously, the owners/shareholders of the company were Anglo American (owning 40%) and BHP Billiton (owning 60%).

Extracting chrome ore and smelting it Mare the main operations of Samancor Chrome. 5 smelting operations operate within the Bushveld Igneous Complex.

Applications are now open for Samancor Chrome’s bursary program for the academic year 2023. Bright students will get bursaries to study in the following fields:

  • Electrical Engineering (which includes electronic engineering)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Finance (CA and Financial Accounting)
  • Geology
  • Environmental Management
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Human Resources Management
  • Mine Surveying
  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Rock Engineering
  • Mining Engineering

Eligibility Criteria

Prior to applying, please make sure you meet the following entry requirements:

  • Presently in matric or matric completion is necessary
  • Applicants must be studying or planning to study in one of the above-listed fields (students presently studying, must be either in 1st, 2nd, or 3 years of their studies)
  • Currently studying at a recognised South African university or provisionally accepted there
  • Your academic record must be strong

Documents Required

Along with your online application, please provide the following supporting documentation. You must submit all these documents – missing documents may disqualify your application:

  • A certified copy of your ID document
  • Certified copy of grade 10 results
  • Certified copy of grade 11 results
  • A certified copy of your latest Matric results (if you are currently enrolled)
  • Certified copy of matriculation results, if still studying
  • Certificate of completion of Matriculation, if completed (certified copy)
  • The full academic record/results of your tertiary education, if you are studying currently (on the letterhead of the institution)
  • Acceptance letter from the university, if applicable (on the letterhead of the institution)
  • Your CV (includes the following information: Your personal information, contact information for your school/university, academic Extracurricular Activities over the past four years, University and/or School achievements over the past four years)
  • Letter of motivation explaining your decision to study in this field (up to 100 words)
