About South African Journal on Human Rights

SAJHR is one of the renowned South African Public Law Journal. It was founded in the year 1985 by the Center for Applied Legal Studies and is situated at the School of Law, University of Witwatersrand. The main aim of SAJHR is to facilitate the advancement of scholarship on justice-related law and human rights.

Other topics accepted by the Journal include submissions related to human rights, legal philosophy, enforcement of human rights in other countries where it is directly relevant to South Africa, constitutional law, administrative and public international law, etc.

SAJHR Bursary 2022

To support the post-graduate students, the University of Witwatersrand is offering SAJHR top-up bursary for the academic year 2022. This bursary is provided to those students who wish to pursue LLM degree, dealing with human rights, justice-related or constitutional issues in any field.

Students can receive this bursary to study at any public University in South Africa.

Bursary Coverage

Since this is a top-up kind of bursary, only the study-related fees are covered which is valued at R30 000. It is a one-time payment that is made to help needy students in covering the cost of study.

Other additional expenses are required to be borne by the students on their own.

Bursary Eligibility Criteria

Students who wish to receive the SAJHR bursary are required to fulfill certain eligibility criteria. Only those candidates who meet the requirements will be considered for the bursary.

• Applicants must be black South African citizens or permanent residents of South Africa
• Students must prove a financial need
• Applicant must be an LLB graduate from any South African University
• Students from the University of Fort Hare, University of Western Cape, University of Venda, University of Limpopo, University of Zululand, and Walter Sisulu University will be given preference over others
• One must be registered at any South African University for LLM in their first or second year of studies
• The applicant is required to achieve a minimum of 65% in the LLB studies
• One must complete coursework and research report or full research/mini-dissertation in the field of human law, constitutional rights, or justice-related law.
• Students must have a strong academic record and must be nearing graduation

Those students who fail to meet the eligibility requirements will not be considered for the bursary.

How to Apply?

If you meet all of the above-mentioned criteria then you can apply for the bursary program by submitting copies of the following documents. If any of the documents are missing the application may be rejected.

• Certified copy of ID document
• Certified copy of passport with permanent address (if you are a permanent resident)
• Details and contact of 2 references who can vouch for you
• A copy of the updated curriculum vitae
• Complete academic record on the institution’s letterhead
• A motivational letter to support your application and to demonstrate your financial need. Students can attach an account statement to prove their income.

• There is no online form for this bursary and students can apply by submitting the above-mentioned documents
• While applying for the bursary one must insert the words, “SAJHR top-up Bursary 2021” in the email subject line
• Shortlisted candidates will receive a notification by the end of November 2021. If you do not receive any communication then you can consider your application as rejected.
