About Stellenbosch University and Gerda Henkel Foundation

Stellenbosch University is one of the leading public universities located in Stellenbosch, South Africa. There are ten faculties in the university. One of them, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, offers the bursary to a selected number of students every year.

Set up in 1976 in Düsseldorf, the foundation aims to promote humanities studies at universities and research institutes.

Gerda Henkel Foundation started operations in Africa and Southeast Asia in 2014. Since then, it has been offering scholarships and supporting humanities projects.

  • Conference attendance fees
  • Publication expenses

Students have to pay for other expenses they may incur during the PhD programme.

Please note that the scholarship does not include Honours programme. Nor does it include coursework MA programmes that have a thesis component under 180 credits.

Eligibility Criteria

The foundation and the university have laid out certain eligibility criteria for the scholarship. Everyone applying for it is required to fulfill all the criteria. Since the foundation receives hundreds of applications and the scholarships are limited, it rejects those that do not meet all the requirements. So cross-check with the eligibility criteria before applying, which are:

  • Must be residing in one of the sub-Saharan African countries
  • Must not be older than 35 years at the time of applying
  • Must have finished a full MA research thesis
  • Must be willing to pursue a full-time PhD degree and undertake research projects in the Historical Humanities field
  • Must be willing to study at the Stellenbosch University in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Must be entering their first year of PhD studies in the academic year 2022
  • Must have scored at least 70% in the final year in the last degree you have completed

Fulfilling the eligibility criteria, however, does not guarantee scholarship funding. It’s at the sole discretion of the foundation selection committee. Preference is given to those students who are from PANGeA partner institutions. The list of candidates published by the foundation will be considered final.
