Which jobs are realistically remote?
Not every job can be done from home. The roles most commonly available remotely in South Africa include:
- Technology – software development, testing, data, IT support.
- Customer support and BPO – including international campaigns.
- Digital marketing – content, social media, SEO, design.
- Writing and admin – copywriting, virtual assistance, bookkeeping.
- Sales – inside sales and account management.
Roles that require physical presence – retail, warehousing, healthcare, trades, security – are generally not remote.
What you actually need
- A reliable internet connection (fibre or a strong LTE signal) and a backup for load shedding.
- A power backup plan – an inverter, UPS or power bank matters in South Africa.
- A quiet, dedicated workspace.
- A capable laptop and, for support roles, a headset.
- Self-discipline and good time management.
Local vs international remote work
You can work remotely for a South African employer, or for an international company that pays in foreign currency (which can pay significantly more). International roles are competitive and usually require proven skills and often overlap with certain time zones.
How to find genuine remote jobs
- Search reputable job boards and filter for "remote".
- Apply through official employer channels.
- Build a portfolio or profile that proves your skills.
- Network on LinkedIn and in relevant online communities.
Avoiding remote-work scams
Remote work attracts scams. Be very cautious of:
- "Work from home" offers that ask you to pay upfront for kits or training.
- Data-capturing or "envelope stuffing" schemes promising high pay for no skill.
- Roles that require you to receive and forward money or parcels.
Legitimate remote employers never ask you to pay to start.
Be realistic
Genuine remote jobs usually require real, marketable skills. If you are starting out, building a skill (like coding, design or digital marketing) dramatically improves your remote prospects.
