Government vs private sector
Government admin clerks follow the public service salary levels (Level 5–8 for clerks through to senior admin officers). Private sector pay is often higher for equivalent roles, especially in Johannesburg and Cape Town, but lacks the government pension and job security benefits.
Skills that increase your pay
Microsoft Office proficiency (especially Excel), SAP, bookkeeping, minute-taking, and bilingualism (English plus Afrikaans or an African language) all command premiums in the admin job market.
