About us:

Luno is the crypto investment app you can rely on, enabling you to buy, store and explore crypto securely. We’re committed to putting the power of cryptocurrency in everyone's hands sensibly and responsibly.

Since 2013, we’ve helped millions of people around the world invest safely in crypto. We do this by cutting through the hype and supporting customers at every step of the way. All products and cryptocurrencies on our platform must first meet stringent legal, risk and technical security standards. We don’t do memecoins.

Transparency is key for us. Luno stores all crypto on a 1:1 basis and we have rigorous processes in place so you can be confident your investment is secure. We’re available in more than 40 countries around the world and we work closely with respective regulators in all of these markets to be fully compliant, as we believe this is the best way to help everyone, everywhere, invest safely.

About the team:

Luno is building towards a future where every person on earth has access to a fair, open financial system. Our Flutter migration is one of the most consequential technical bets we're making, replacing separate iOS and Android codebases with a single, high-performance Flutter app that serves millions of customers across dozens of markets.

Your role in a nutshell:

As our Lead Flutter Engineer, you will set the technical strategy for this migration, establish the engineering standards that the whole Flutter practice builds on, and ensure we arrive at a codebase Lunauts will be proud to work in for years to come. This is a role for someone who thinks at scale, influences without authority, and is energised by the intersection of deep craft and organisational impact.

Your mission will be:

Flutter Platform Strategy:

  • Own the technical vision and roadmap for Luno's Flutter platform. Define the migration strategy across fleets, establish architectural standards, select and govern shared tooling, and make the high-impact decisions that will shape the codebase for years. Present this strategy to engineering leadership and the wider organisation.

Architecture & Technical Standards:

  • Design and document Luno's Flutter architecture, including state management, layering patterns, platform channel strategy, design system integration, accessibility standards, and localisation architecture. Ensure consistent application across all product fleets through clear reference implementations, RFCs, and design review.

Migration Programme Delivery:

  • Partner with fleet engineers, engineering managers, and the ADL team to sequence and de-risk the full migration programme. Identify critical path dependencies, provide technical governance on high-risk migration workstreams, and ensure quality gates are maintained as velocity increases.

Engineering Community & Craft:

  • Lead the Flutter chapter at Luno. Run design reviews, write decision records, maintain the internal Flutter handbook, and create the learning environment where mid and senior Flutter engineers grow fast. Represent Luno externally: conference talks, open-source contributions, and developer community engagement.

Commercial & Product Influence:

  • Translate complex technical constraints into clear product implications. Partner with product and design leaders to ensure the Flutter platform unlocks Luno's product ambitions, rather than limiting them. Influence the roadmap with architectural insight, and proactively surface opportunities that new Flutter capabilities create.

A little about you:

Minimum Role Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of professional mobile engineering experience, with at least 3 years leading hybrid development on production applications at significant scale.
  • Expert-level Dart and Flutter knowledge: rendering pipeline, widget internals, platform channels, custom render objects, Impeller, and the Flutter engine.
  • Proven experience designing and governing cross-team Flutter architectures and migrating large, complex legacy mobile applications.
  • Deep expertise in testability - widget, integration, golden-image, and end-to-end test strategies at programme scale.
  • Strong understanding of mobile release engineering: automated pipelines, phased rollouts, feature flags, crash monitoring, and A/B testing in a Flutter context.
  • Track record of defining and driving adoption of engineering standards across multiple teams.
  • Prior staff/principal engineering or equivalent IC leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Advantageous: native iOS (Swift) or Android (Kotlin) background; prior fintech or regulated-app experience; contributions to open-source Flutter packages.

Critical Competency Requirements

Technical Vision

  • Sets a coherent, compelling technical direction for the Flutter platform that the whole engineering organisation can align behind. Writes clearly, speaks with authority, and updates the strategy as context evolves.

System-level Architecture

  • Designs robust, scalable Flutter architectures that work across multiple teams and survive contact with real-world complexity: diverse devices, regulated data, evolving product requirements.

Organisational Influence

  • Drives technical decisions and standards through influence, not hierarchy. Builds trust across engineering, product, and design to shape the way Luno builds.

Community influence

  • Invests in the collective: runs the Flutter chapter, writes the internal playbook, and creates the conditions for mid and senior engineers to grow into future leads.

Commercial awareness

  • Understands how technical decisions affect product velocity, customer experience, and business outcomes. Makes the case for investment in platform quality in terms that resonate with engineering and product leadership alike.

AI Proficiency

  • Systematically uses advanced prompting to design, write and maintain software, and clear technical debt without degrading delivery velocity.
